Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Medicine is a system of health care that focuses on the use of natural therapeutics to promote health and address the root causes of illness and imbalance rather than covering up symptoms. This distinctive field of medicine has a primary focus on the prevention of chronic disease, to allow the healing power of nature transform the body and mind towards greater health and vitality. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) seek to restore and maintain optimum health in their patients by emphasizing nature's inherent self-healing processes via a combination of conventional and holistic fields of medicine, which in turn leads to an integrative and individualized therapeutic approach. NDs combine the wisdom of nature with the rigors of modern science.
Naturopathic Doctors complete four years of medical school with the first two years focused on the basic sciences, similar to traditional medical school programs and the final two years devoted to studying and practicing natural therapeutics in a clinical setting. After graduating, the training received in Naturopathic medical school enables NDs to provide a wide range of natural therapeutics and includes all aspects of family and primary care medicine, from pediatrics to geriatrics, as well as a full range of natural modalities.
The Six Principles of Naturopathic Medicine:
- First Do No Harm [primum non nocere]: Utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies.
- The Healing Power of Nature [vis medicatrix naturae]: Trust in the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself.
- Identify and Treat the Cause [tolle causam]: Look beyond the symptoms to the underlying cause.
- Treat the Whole Person [tolle totum]: View the body as an integrated whole in all its physical and spiritual dimensions.
- The Doctor as Teacher [docere]: Educate patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining health.
- Prevention is the Best Cure: Focus on overall health, wellness and disease prevention.
