Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) can be characterized as “energy work,” but in reality there is a scientific basis for this unique type of body work. It is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord in the central nervous system. Even subtle imbalances in one’s nervous system can have profound effects on a person's health and wellbeing. CST helps correct such imbalances and restore health.
By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction (see list below).
The craniosacral system is a physiological system made up of cranial bones, the sacrum and the membrane structures that connect these two areas of the body. There is a distinct rhythm within this system (the craniosacral rhythm) created by the flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the membrane complex. A craniosacral practitioner assesses this rhythm and uses the information to diagnose and treat imbalances within the body. Occasionally you may experience what can be considered "side effects.” You may feel worse after a session for a short period of time but this is really part of the healing process. This may be due to areas of the body "waking up" and therefore being more sensitive than previously. Also, the rebalancing process can sometimes take longer than the duration of the treatment and the body needs some extra time to adjust to the new flow of energy through it.
